Name: Mauri Formigoni
Address: Los Rodriguez, San Miguel de Allende, Gto., Mexico

Peaceable Kingdom (Reino Apacible) is an animal sanctuary on 30 acres of high Mexican desert just above Los Rodriguez, GTO, Mexico about 30 minutes from San Miguel de Allende.  Peaceable Kingdom is a hope, a wish, a dream, not yet a reality.  We are a not-for-profit organization where the animals live as freely and naturally as they can but need to maintain a bit of socialization.  My wish is that the animals live with me on the land and in the house as though they are my family, with room to run and to react naturally to each other without violence.

All animals are neutered, have all vaccinations, and receive weekly veterinary check-ups.  Currently there are 23 dogs, 7 burros, 4 cats, 10 chickens, fish, canaries, and lots of green plants and flowers.  Whatever animals are in need are welcome within reason.  A balance of personalities is essential for harmony.

Every few months we have sterilization clinics for the pets of the residents of Los Rodriguez.  Volunteer veterinarians come with medication, tools, and good will to spay and neuter dogs and cats, and occasionally male burros and horses.  The costs for the people is little ($10p) or nothing, and we also serve to educate owners with correct pet care and feeding.

Mauri Formigoni, a lifetime caregiver and former professor of art at the Univ. of Illinois, Springfield, is the director.  Three additional people work with the animals, the grounds, and the house as a team.   Fresh homemade food is prepared for the dogs each day, rice with vegetables and cooked meat with broth are served twice a day.  An emergency vet is on call 24hours a day, 7 days a week.

About Us: I have been a life-long care giver.  I worked first with emotionally disturbed children under Dr. Bruno Bettelheim at the University of Chicago.  I was a professional artist and taught drawing and painting at the University of Illinois at Springfield as a tenured professor, but have worked for many years in animal shelters in Chicago and here in Mexico, where I have lived for 11 years.

Miguel, (Juan Miguel Farardo Yanez), has been a veterinarian’s assistant at the S.P.A. of San Miguel for 23 years and  has worked for most of the vets in San Miguel.  He is married and has 2 children.  He is a kind and sensitive worker who supports the goals of the sanctuary.  Several other part-time workers from Los Rodriguez help with the animals, grounds, or house. We have used the veterinary services of Dr. Jose Estrada, and Dr. Octavio Capitan.

We have a pantheon available for a peaceful, dignified, specialized burial of pets with perpetual care.  Options are available.  Special plantings, a stone or mosaic, a coffin, or a star in the sky named in memory of your pet are possibilities.  Services can be private, religious, or communal.  You may visit whenever you wish.

Donations are accepted through Paypal in care of  Material donations are welcome as well.  Blankets, towels, dog collars or leashes, food dishes, newspapers or animal toys are always needed.

We would be happy to have volunteers to walk, play, or help out at the facility.  Please contact us at our e-mail (above) and call 044-415-149-1295 or 122-2167 (Nextel) with your ideas.  If you wish to visit, call first and please do not bring your own pets.
