The most polpular thermal sping offering three pools with thermal waters. Through one pool you could wade down a dark tunnel into a large dome-shaped cave and relax in the warm waters. The water temperature is about 38º C (100º F). This place also has showers, a locker room and a good restaurant.
"The water was perfect - no chlorine or sulpher smells, and not super-hot, so you could soak for a long time. There are large grassy areas, trees, flowers, tables and chairs, a little boutique and several changing rooms. They also have a small restaurant and chaise lounges... There was food and drink service delivered "poolside" so you could run up a tab and pay at the end of the day."
"La Gruta is a green little oasis on a dry, dusty road. As you enter, you are greeted by seemingly endless rows of potted pansies, geraniums, and other flowers. The pools are small, but so relaxing.
From the main pool, you can venture through a passageway in a stone wall (a little unnerving the first time you go, but you get used to it) into a dark cave, where fresh, hot spring water gushes in every 30 minutes or so. People line up for a soothing massage under the warm waterfall. Sunlight peirces the humid air through gaps in the cave ceiling and lights up the sparkling water.
They have recently added on to the subterranean passageway, creating ever darker and more private hideaways in the water. The whole thing sounds very claustrophobia-inducing, but is actually quite pleasant and relaxing.
Any visitor to San Miguel should make a trip to La Gruta. The bus to Atotonilco and Dolores Hidalgo stops here, or take a taxi. Getting back can be a little tricky, but if you don't mind waiting by the side of the road for a while, you can get a ride back on a bus for only 7 pesos."
