"When Patrice Wynne founded San Miguel Designs, her love of color, her natural entrepreneurialism and penchant for helping others found their perfect expression. Working with local seamstresses in a fair trade environment, she creates products with textiles imprinted with Mexicon icons: Frida Kahlo, Days of the Dead, the Virgin of Guadalupe, Corazones, Papel Picado, Las Senoritas. It all began with a line of aprons, but now includes handbags, curtains, kimonos, men’s ties and shirts, cosmetic bags and buttons made from fabric scraps. The whimsical collection has been featured in magazines, books and museum exhibitions, boutique stores around the world and airport stores throughout Mexico.
'Mentoring young women and working with the Mexican women seamstresses is one of the greatest joys of my life,' says Patrice. With her multi-talented assistant, Mayela Vazquez, Patrice is able to stay in the vanguard of new designs and trends, often attending shows in Mexico City. 'I work with the two families that do all my production. The entire Lopez Lopez family, headed by Sra Flavia Lopez Lopez, participate in all aspects of the production from cutting and sewing to ironing and delivery,' Patrice explains. The other family, Elda and Veronica Martinez, are two sisters who learned their art from their father, a well-known mariachi costume maker in San Miguel. San Miguel Designs’ company slogan, which she shares with a Mexican political party, is “juntos somos mas”, together we are more, which evokes a laugh from her seamstresses each time."
